PRIVATE OBEDIENCE TRAINING SESSIONS Western PA Humane Society is proud to offer private sessions at our
North Shore Shelter. Can’t wait till the next series of classes begin at WPHS??? Are you ready to start training your new dog
right away? If your schedule is too packed to attend evening and weekend classes, you can schedule private lessons
where you and your dog will learn the skills taught in our classes. Private lessons can be scheduled during weekdays by
calling 412-321-4625, ext 247.The cost of private lessons is $45 per session (discount available for members and dogs
adopted from the shelter); there is a 3-session minimum.
Refund Policy If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, refunds will be issued. Notice of cancellation by
a student must be done no later than three days prior to the event in order to be rescheduled or for a refund to be issued.
Inclement WeatherNotification of inclement weather cancellations will be posted on our Obedience Training automated i
nformation line at 412-321-4625 x500. In addition we make every attempt to send email or voicemail notification if a class is
cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances please be sure we have a current daytime phone and/or email for you.
Classes will normally resume the following week at the regularly scheduled time.

Level 1 -- Basic Education
Puppy Class A 7-week class for puppies less than 15 weeks of age on the first day of class. This is primarily a
socialization class to get puppies off to a good start. Puppies learn to play well with each other and to accept handling
of their bodies, ears, faces and feet. Your puppy will also learn to walk on a loose leash, sit, and lie down on cue.
Instructors will explain how to deal with common puppy behaviors. This class is lots of funwith free play,
‘pass the puppy,’ games, and contests.

Small Dog Obedience - for dogs under 30# - Worried about your little dog in amongst a bunch of bouncing Labs?
Small dog owners have a legitimate concern over their dog's safety in a class full of dogs 5 times their size. Put your mind
at ease and join our small dog obedience class. All the regular obedience exercises will be taught - sit, stand, down, stay,
come and walk on a loose lead- with a limited class size in both numbers and weight! No dogs over 30# in this class.

Teen Intervention A 7-week class for dogs 4 months to 10 months with no prior class experience. If they were children,
they would be taking the car keys and staying out all night. Living with an adolescent dog can be a nightmare. They chew,
they lunge, they howl. This class will help you control the teenage outbursts without losing your sanity. A variety
of behavioral problems will be addressed, and you will learn how to teach your dog basic obedience skills--heeling on a leash,
oose leash walking, sit stay, down stay, stand stay and recall (come when called).

Adult Basic I A 7-week class for dogs over 10 months, an introduction or refresher course. Your instructor will show you
how to teach basic obedience skillsheeling on a leash, loose leash walking, sit stay, down stay, stand stay and recall
(come when called). There is no age limitin fact, mature dogs will often surprise you with their appetite for learning.
This class is an excellent refresher for dogs who have passed the Teen Intervention class more than 4 months ago.

Advanced Puppy A 7-week class for puppies up to 10 months of age. Continue the fun! Turn loose lead walking into
heeling, extend the stays and calming exercises, and learn how to keep your puppy on his toes and ready to meet the world!

Adult Basic II Now is the time to build on the foundation work you learned in Adult Basic I. Emphasis will be on
improving and fine tuning your dog’s newly acquired skills. Loose lead heeling is a goal and multiple heeling exercises
to help promote this will be taught. Work on sit-stay and down-stay continues, increasing time, distance and distractions.
Recalls (coming when called) is also on the agenda, increasing distances and distractions the dog had to work through.
As always, behavior issues will be addressed as they arise. Throw in a few fun things and Basics II will have your dog
well on his way to being an exemplary citizen! Prerequisite of Adult Basic I.

Level 3 -- Advanced Education
An introduction to Competition (formerly Advanced Basic) Is your dog ready for the Show ring? This 7-week class may be just what your dog needs to stand out from all the others. Even if you have a mixed breed and cannot compete for an AKC title you can have a dog that is able to respond like he or she has one. This class will help you build on the foundation that you established in Adult Basic and the Intermediate classes we will work on skills needed to achieve your Companion Dog (CD) title. Learn how to lengthen your stays, make your heeling more precise, and help your dog ignore distractions. The last class will be in the form of a Dog Show! Prerequisite of Adult Basic II or CGC/TDI.

Super Puppy The third puppy class in the series. Super Puppy helps you continue work on building good behavior in
your dog as he or she matures through those troublesome teens. You will also super-socialize your dog by exposure to
wheelchairs, crutches, canes, elevators, and all sorts of novel experiences to build a level of sophistication and confidence
that will make your dog the envy of the neighborhood. This class also prepares your puppy for Advanced Basic or CGC/TDI
if over 12 months. Advanced Puppy is a prerequisite.

Just in time for the last test of the year, Final test for 2008 to be offered in October. Canine Good Citizen / Therapy Dogs International - A class for dogs that have completed Adult Basic II or Adult Basic I with instructor’s recommendation. Think your dog might have what it takes to be a therapy dog? Do you have the desire to help other people? This class takes training to the next level, conditioning dogs to remain calm around wheelchairs and walkers and to cheerfully accept the attention of new and different people. WPHS has a growing need for therapy dogs! This class also prepares your dog for the Canine Good Citizen / Therapy Dog International licensing test. Prerequisite: Adult Basic I with instructor’s referral, or Adult Basic II.

Level 4 Expanding our Horizons!
Introduction to Agility Skills and RallyThis 4 week class will introduce you and your dog to agility skills and introduce the sport of Rally. In Agility we will learn about start line stays, targeting, contact equipment contact zones, dogs accepting movement under their feet, foot work, understanding rear end movement, and flatwork handling. Foundations of Agility class working with various exercises to build muscle tone and handler-focus, while introducing the dog to several agility obstacles with safety as a primary goal; all the while building confidence in both dog and handler.
Rally is obedience with a twist, signs give you the directions and you move from station to station in numerical order. This is a fun way to improve your heeling skills while having fun with your dog. We will review all the novice exercises in this quick 4 week session! Class size is limited; Prerequisite: Basic level course. Cost $55.00

Dynamic Dogs - is a class for dogs who have received their CGC/TDI titles and are ready to get started in the community. This class addresses Doggy Etiquette for Community Sites, and improves handlers’ skills for traveling politely with their dogs in many new places. This is a perfect class to help dogs increase their confidence by visiting community sites across
Pittsburgh
. These visits allow handlers of dogs who have gotten their TDI to gain experience with TDI visits. The first two weeks of class are held at WPHS, the first is an orientation with NO DOGS. The remaining weeks are scheduled in community sites. The class is limited to 8 dogs, and participation in the community visits is at the discretion of the instructor.

CLICK indicates that the instructor uses clicker training. If you haven’t tried it, you should! It is the newest, hottest method
in training, using gentle, fun exercises that help the dog learn quickly.

Please fill out a separate application for each dog. Copies of vaccination certificates should be brought to first class for
instructor's inspection. For your dog's safety, we must have proof of vaccination for each dog registered. You may be
requested for proof of booster shots if your dog is due for shots during the class term.
